Anyone dealing with any illness - whether it be a nasty cold, flu, or something that will eventually go away, or some serious chronic or even terminal illnesses, there is absolutely no question that you are going to have days where you are cranky, frustrated, upset, or any combination of those emotions.
One of the best pieces of advice I received from a very influential person was this:
You can't control how you feel. You can only control how you deal with those emotions. Sometimes, emotions are completely irrational and you may not have a CLUE as to why you are feeling the way you are - but it is important to just relax and ALLOW yourself to feel these emotions - no matter if they are rational or not.
For instance, if you are horribly upset or cranky, it's important to acknowledge this feeling - but to make sure that you are not hurting others in the process. This is usually when I decide to forego any big plans and spend a night at home. Or I go and do something that I really truly enjoy - often alone. Sometimes it is just a walk to blow off steam, or being productive and getting some needed housework done, or just turning in early.
If I feel awfully sad - regardless if there is a justifying reason or not - I throw on a couple chick flicks and I take the time to cry even if I have no real reason to.
If you don't acknowledge the feeling, it will just get bottled up, then explode and fizz and crack over everyone you care about. That's never good.
I am horribly cranky tonight. Yes there are some valid reasons to my frustration, but not enough for me to be this 'on-edge'. So, I came home, did something nice for my puppy, cuddled with him, put on a movie, had some decaf tea, and re-did my toenails. I was able to vent with my mother (who is always very patient with my nonsensical rants), acknowledge that I am horribly frustrated, and now I am doing everything I can to focus on things that I enjoy.
Surround yourself with activities and people you love - that way, when the shit happens, you have other, more important, things to focus on.
