Enjoyable Moments

One of the assignments of the course that I am in at the pain clinic included writing down all sorts of things that make me feel great. Emotionally, psychologically, physically....

I took the opportunity to separate it into two different models - the physical and the non-physical. The physical included simple things like hugs, someone touching my cheek, scalp massages, etc... But what I did find is that the non-physical list was much longer!!
Simple things like flowers, or even a simple look, compliments, cooking, thoughtfulness, reading a good book, researching a new topic, spending time in the mountains, spending time outside in general, walking through a farmer's market, road trips, having tea, bubble baths, etc... All of these things make me smile and help me to enjoy life just a little bit more.

One huge thing about focusing on these non-physical enjoyable items is that it helps me to focus on the NOW. To get out of my own head, stop worrying about what's coming up next week or even what happened yesterday or the day before. It slows everything down and allows me to be in the moment and enjoy exactly what I am doing right then and there.

It's not foolproof and it definitely takes practice, but writing it down always seems to help as well. It's not even so simple as 'focusing on the positive', because we have all heard that line, but more filling the quiet parts of my day with small little activities and gestures that I know make me smile.
