I have had more bloodwork done, more MRIs, CT scans, abdominal, pelvic, and cardiac ultrasounds, more scopes, basically more diagnostic testing done in the last year than I have since I first got sick... All trying to figure out exactly what is going on and coming up with a game plan.
I am very lucky that my doctors are combining their efforts and doing what they can to figure things out.
This does, however, usually cause a great deal of confusion. I have to keep track of who ordered which tests, what they were looking for, what possible results mean, when to fast, when to drink 32oz of water, when to wear clothing without metal, when to skip my morning meds, but most of all - who to call or see for follow-up regarding each test.
While dealing with specialists is preferred when dealing with so many complex illnesses and issues, my biggest tip is to have EVERY test copied to my family doctor. That way, if I forget who to call for a follow-up, or I forget who was looking for what, at least it is all documented at the office of my family doctor, who can readily explain things.
It's also much easier to get in to see my family doctor over a specialist.
Just a tip for those who get confused - it is good to know where all of my results are going to. And this IS something that I can control - which is rare. When you are getting the test done, just simply ask to have the results copied to your family doctor. Most places are happy to comply. :)
