An Apple a Day

So I was contemplating restricting my diet more for a while. You hear so many success stories about various different diets that it has been getting me curious about trying something new.
Of course, the biggest trend is removing meats and focusing on a plant-based diet.
Entirely plant-based.
I am not ready (or even necessarily interested in going entirely plant-based, but making a few changes is not a bad idea).

So, of course, I made some basic adjustments, like having tea more often again, to trying to have more vegetables and having more healthy snacks - like roasted potatoes, apples, kiwi, even a little bit of pomegranate.
Then last night, for dinner, instead of having a meal with a big portion of meat and mostly carbs, I decided to have a cut-up apple, with a piece of rye bread, some goat cheese, a few pieces of pomegranate, dipped in oil and pineapple infused balsamic vinegar (all from our local farmer's market).
It was absolutely delicious.
I could eat that each day... if it weren't for the fallout.

Unfortunately, the mixture of the apple and the few pomegranate seeds were enough to cause a moderately severe flare-up of my Crohn's Disease. Severe intestinal cramping, pain, and I was up with 'waterfalls' 10 times overnight. I had difficulty relaxing, I had difficulty sleeping, and I even ended up sleeping in the guest bedroom because I was rocking and writhing in pain, then in the washroom so many times.

One apple and a few seeds.

So - an apple a day is definitely not an option. Pomegranate seeds are only good once every few months.

Today, of course, my intestines are super sensitive and inflammation is rampant. So today I am eating foods that have always been easy on my intestines - fish and potatoes. Carbs. Perogies.

Tomorrow I will try something else in the 'plant-based' list of foods (which is a surprisingly long list) and see what the effects are for my body.
You never know! I may totally fall in love with some trendy diet. As long as I enjoy it and it doesn't make me feel worse, I am more than willing to try something new.

Better luck next time I guess.
