I have been taking Berinert now since September.
It has truly improved certain symptoms - I am not going to the ER as much for emergency treatment of swelling in my intestines or throat/chest. I am not as puffy and swollen on a daily basis, and I can relax a little if I happen to get upset or excited, because now I am less worried about getting so excited that my throat swells up. It is a nice kind of freedom not to have to completely hold back emotions lest they result in a dangerous swelling episode. (With that said, I really *should* have gone into the ER on Friday night for a throat swell I had after some upsetting phone calls).
Berinert injections have always been a little finnicky. I have to let the vials get to room temperature before mixing them and then I need to inject very slowly, otherwise it makes me really sick on top of knocking me out for the remainder of the day.
Usually I try and inject over 60+ seconds (best is between 70-90 seconds), but I had never really found a steady counting rate, so it has varied slightly each time.
This a.m. however, I watched the syringe movement extra closely and found a rate that seems to really work for me. I inject 0.1 mL over three seconds (3mL total). When I pull the mixed medication into the syringe, it is almost never a full 3mL. Only once have I been able to get the full amount of medication into the syringe without several air bubbles. So today, using my three-second per 0.1mL method, I injected over 86 seconds and do not feel extra ill, and it was a nice even injection.
Unfortunately for me, I must have hit a wrong spot because I ended up bleeding pretty badly afterwards, but I am thankful for the absence of nausea.
Now back to bed for the rest of the morning/early afternoon. Time to let this med knock me out and do its job!!!
Til next time!
